Thick charcoal stripes on a natural sisal base make the MCHORO collection of striped baskets a popular choice for those who love monochrome interiors. Hand woven by a small rural weaving cooperative in Kenya, these woven baskets come in three different sizes and can be used all over the home as fruit baskets and desk tidies, large planters and laundry baskets. However you choose to use these fabulous storage baskets they are sure to bring a splash of style to any corner of the home.

The craftswomen in this growing cooperative are extremely skilled at weaving repeat patterns, using their tape measures to produce our set sizes and meeting weekly with their Chairlady to arrange work, deliver completed orders and pick up wages. Sisal grass is purchased ready-rolled when orders come in, and is hand-dyed in large vats before a traditional twining method is used to produce each basket. Where once these women used to have to travel to Nairobi to sell their woven baskets, today The Basket Room places regular and fairly-paid orders with this most adept group, and completed baskets are stored in purpose-built mud huts.

Weaving takes place primarily during the dry seasons, since most weavers are subsistence farmers using basket weaving as a supplementary means of income. To own one of our woven baskets is to support us in our journey to empower women, since basket weaving enables these women to provide for themselves and their families, and to overcome barriers.  Each woven basket comes with a thank you card from the cooperative who made yours.
